How To Install node-gyp on Debian 9

In this tutorial we learn how to install node-gyp
on Debian 9.
What is node-gyp
node-gyp is:
node-gyp is a cross-platform command-line tool written in Node.js for compiling native addon modules for Node.js.
It features :
- Easy to use, consistent interface
- Same commands to build a module on every platform
- Support of multiple target versions of Node.js
node-gyp replaces node-waf program which was deprecated in Node.js 0.8 and removed since Node.js 0.10.
Node.js is an event-based server-side javascript engine.
There are three methods to install node-gyp
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install node-gyp Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install node-gyp
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install node-gyp
Install node-gyp Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install node-gyp
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install node-gyp
Install node-gyp Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install node-gyp
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install node-gyp
How To Uninstall node-gyp on Debian 9
To uninstall only the node-gyp
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove node-gyp
Uninstall node-gyp And Its Dependencies
To uninstall node-gyp
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove node-gyp
Remove node-gyp Configurations and Data
To remove node-gyp
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge node-gyp
Remove node-gyp configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove node-gyp
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge node-gyp
