In this tutorial we learn how to install nbdkit on CentOS 7.

What is nbdkit

NBD is a protocol for accessing block devices (hard disks and disk-like things) over the network. ’nbdkit’ is a toolkit for creating NBD servers. The key features are * Multithreaded NBD server written in C with good performance. * Well-documented, simple plugin API with a stable ABI guarantee. Allows you to export “unconventional” block devices easily. * Liberal license (BSD) allows nbdkit to be linked to proprietary libraries or included in proprietary code. You probably want to install one of more plugins (nbdkit-plugin-*). To develop plugins, install the nbdkit-devel package and start by reading the nbdkit(1) and nbdkit-plugin(3) manual pages.

We can use yum or dnf to install nbdkit on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install nbdkit.

Install nbdkit on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install nbdkit using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install nbdkit

Install nbdkit on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install nbdkit using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install nbdkit

How To Uninstall nbdkit on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the nbdkit package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove nbdkit
