How To Install nagios3-core on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install nagios3-core
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is nagios3-core
nagios3-core is:
Nagios is a monitoring and management system for hosts, services and networks.
Nagios’ features include:
- Monitoring of network services (via TCP port, SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.)
- Plugin interface to allow for user-developed service checks
- Contact notifications when problems occur and get resolved (via email, pager, or user-defined method)
- Ability to define event handlers to be run during service or host events (for proactive problem resolution)
- Web output (current status, notifications, problem history, log file, etc.)
This package included the nagios core without the webfrontend
Nagios was written in C and is designed to be easy to understand and modify to fit your own needs.
This package is the new version 3.x series of nagios, which replaced the 2.x versions.
Nagios is a replacement of the Netsaint project. It accepts and uses the previous Netsaint modules transparently.

There are three methods to install nagios3-core
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install nagios3-core Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install nagios3-core
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install nagios3-core
Install nagios3-core Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install nagios3-core
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install nagios3-core
Install nagios3-core Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install nagios3-core
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install nagios3-core
How To Uninstall nagios3-core on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the nagios3-core
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove nagios3-core
Uninstall nagios3-core And Its Dependencies
To uninstall nagios3-core
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove nagios3-core
Remove nagios3-core Configurations and Data
To remove nagios3-core
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge nagios3-core
Remove nagios3-core configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove nagios3-core
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge nagios3-core
