How To Install mutter-common on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mutter-common
on Kali Linux.
What is mutter-common
mutter-common is:
Mutter is a Wayland display server and X11 window manager and compositor library. It contains functionality related to, among other things, window management, window compositing, focus tracking, workspace management, keybindings and monitor configuration.
Internally it uses a fork of Cogl, a hardware acceleration abstraction library used to simplify usage of OpenGL pipelines, as well as a fork of Clutter, a scene graph and user interface toolkit.
This package contains the shared files.
There are three methods to install mutter-common
on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mutter-common Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter-common
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mutter-common

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter-common
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mutter-common
Install mutter-common Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter-common
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mutter-common
How To Uninstall mutter-common on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the mutter-common
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mutter-common
Uninstall mutter-common And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mutter-common
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mutter-common
Remove mutter-common Configurations and Data
To remove mutter-common
configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mutter-common
