How To Install mplayer on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mplayer on Kali Linux.
What is mplayer
mplayer is:
MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. It can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies.
Another big feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, but also SDL.

There are three methods to install mplayer on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mplayer Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mplayerInstall mplayer Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mplayerInstall mplayer Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mplayerHow To Uninstall mplayer on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the mplayer package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mplayerUninstall mplayer And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mplayer and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mplayerRemove mplayer Configurations and Data
To remove mplayer configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mplayerRemove mplayer configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mplayer configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mplayerDependencies
