How To Install mplayer-gui on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mplayer-gui on Kali Linux.
What is mplayer-gui
mplayer-gui is:
MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. It can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies.
Another big feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, but also SDL.
This package includes the GUI variant of MPlayer.
There are three methods to install mplayer-gui on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mplayer-gui Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer-gui using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mplayer-guiInstall mplayer-gui Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer-gui using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install mplayer-gui using aptitude by running the following command:

To uninstall only the mplayer-gui package we can use the following command:

To uninstall mplayer-gui and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mplayer-guiRemove mplayer-gui Configurations and Data
To remove mplayer-gui configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mplayer-guiRemove mplayer-gui configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mplayer-gui configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
