How To Install mime-support on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mime-support
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is mime-support
mime-support is:
As these files can be used by all MIME compliant programs, they have been moved into their own package that others can depend upon.
Other packages add themselves as viewers/editors/composers/etc by using the provided “update-mime” program.
In addition, the commands “see”, “edit”, “compose”, and “print” will display, alter, create, and print (respectively) any file using a program determined from the entries in the mime.types and mailcap files.
There are three methods to install mime-support
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mime-support Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mime-support
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mime-support
Install mime-support Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mime-support
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mime-support
Install mime-support Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mime-support
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mime-support
How To Uninstall mime-support on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the mime-support
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mime-support
Uninstall mime-support And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mime-support
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mime-support
Remove mime-support Configurations and Data
To remove mime-support
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mime-support
Remove mime-support configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mime-support
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mime-support
