What is microcode_ctl

The microcode_ctl utility is a companion to the microcode driver written by Tigran Aivazian [email protected]. The microcode update is volatile and needs to be uploaded on each system boot i.e. it doesn’t reflash your cpu permanently, reboot and it reverts back to the old microcode.

We can use yum or dnf to install microcode_ctl on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install microcode_ctl.

Install microcode_ctl on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install microcode_ctl using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install microcode_ctl

Install microcode_ctl on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install microcode_ctl using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install microcode_ctl

How To Uninstall microcode_ctl on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the microcode_ctl package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove microcode_ctl
