How To Install meep-mpich2 on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install meep-mpich2 on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is meep-mpich2
meep-mpich2 is:
Meep (or MEEP) is a free finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation software package developed at MIT to model electromagnetic systems.
Its features include:
- Simulation in 1d, 2d, 3d, and cylindrical coordinates.
- Distributed memory parallelism on any system supporting the MPI standard.
- Dispersive (including loss/gain) and nonlinear (Kerr & Pockels) materials. Magnetic permeability and electric/magnetic conductivities.
- PML absorbing boundaries and/or perfect conductor and/or Bloch-periodic boundary conditions.
- Exploitation of symmetries to reduce the computation size . even/odd mirror symmetries and 90/180 degree rotations.
- Complete scriptability - either via a Scheme scripting front-end (as in libctl and MPB), or callable as a C++ library.
- Field output in the HDF5 standard scientific data format, supported by many visualization tools.
- Arbitrary material and source distributions.
- Field analyses including flux spectra, frequency extraction, and energy integrals; completely programmable.
- Multi-parameter optimization, root-finding, integration, etcetera (via libctl).
This package contains the MPICH2 version of the software.
There are three methods to install meep-mpich2 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install meep-mpich2 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install meep-mpich2 using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install meep-mpich2
Install meep-mpich2 Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install meep-mpich2 using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install meep-mpich2
Install meep-mpich2 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install meep-mpich2 using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install meep-mpich2
How To Uninstall meep-mpich2 on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the meep-mpich2 package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove meep-mpich2
Uninstall meep-mpich2 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall meep-mpich2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove meep-mpich2
Remove meep-mpich2 Configurations and Data
To remove meep-mpich2 configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge meep-mpich2
Remove meep-mpich2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove meep-mpich2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge meep-mpich2
