How To Install mediainfo on Ubuntu 20.04

on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is mediainfo
mediainfo is:
MediaInfo is a utility used for retrieving technical information and other metadata about audio or video files.
A non-exhaustive list of the information MediaInfo can retrieve from media files include:
- General: title, author, director, album, track number, date, duration…
- Video: codec, aspect, fps, bitrate…
- Audio: codec, sample rate, channels, language, bitrate…
- Text: language of subtitle
- Chapters: number of chapters, list of chapters
MediaInfo supports the following formats:
- Video: MKV, OGM, AVI, DivX, WMV, QuickTime, Real, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD (VOB)…
- Video Codecs: DivX, XviD, MSMPEG4, ASP, H.264, AVC…)
- Audio: OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, AIFF…
- Subtitles: SRT, SSA, ASS, SAMI… MediaInfo supplies technical and tag information about a video or audio file
This package includes the command line interface.
There are three methods to install mediainfo
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mediainfo Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mediainfo
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mediainfo

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mediainfo
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mediainfo
Install mediainfo Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mediainfo
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mediainfo
How To Uninstall mediainfo on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the mediainfo
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mediainfo
Uninstall mediainfo And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mediainfo
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mediainfo
Remove mediainfo Configurations and Data
To remove mediainfo
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mediainfo
Remove mediainfo configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mediainfo
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mediainfo
