How To Install mdns-scan on Ubuntu 20.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mdns-scan
on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is mdns-scan
mdns-scan is:
mdns-scan is a tool for scanning for mDNS/DNS-SD services published on the local network.
It works by issuing a mDNS PTR query to the special RR _services._dns-sd._udp.local for retrieving a list of all currently registered services on the local link.
mDNS/DNS-SD is part of Apple’s Zeroconf strategy (a.k.a. Bonjour). The avahi-daemon package is an implementation of mDNS/DNS-SD.
There are three methods to install mdns-scan
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mdns-scan Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mdns-scan
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mdns-scan
Install mdns-scan Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mdns-scan
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mdns-scan
Install mdns-scan Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mdns-scan
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mdns-scan
How To Uninstall mdns-scan on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the mdns-scan
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mdns-scan
Uninstall mdns-scan And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mdns-scan
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mdns-scan
Remove mdns-scan Configurations and Data
To remove mdns-scan
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mdns-scan
Remove mdns-scan configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mdns-scan
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mdns-scan
