How To Install mcrypt on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mcrypt
on Debian 9.
What is mcrypt
mcrypt is:
mcrypt is a crypting program, intended to be replacement for the old unix crypt(1). But it can do a lot more, since with its libmcrypt library it can encrypt and decrypt with the following alogirhtms: BLOWFISH, TWOFISH, DES, TripleDES, 3-WAY, SAFER-sk64, SAFER-sk128, SAFER+, OKI97, GOST, RC2, RC6, MARS, IDEA, RIJNDAEL-128, RIJNDAEL-192, SERPENT, RIJNDAEL-256, CAST-128 (known as CAST5), CAST-256, ARCFOUR, ENIGMA, PANAMA, XTEA and WAKE.
Please note that this package is buggy and unmaintained by the upstream authors. If you can, please look for other implementations (openssl, gnutls, gnupg).
There are three methods to install mcrypt
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mcrypt Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mcrypt
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mcrypt

sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mcrypt
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mcrypt
Install mcrypt Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mcrypt
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mcrypt
How To Uninstall mcrypt on Debian 9
To uninstall only the mcrypt
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mcrypt
Uninstall mcrypt And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mcrypt
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mcrypt
Remove mcrypt Configurations and Data
To remove mcrypt
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mcrypt
Remove mcrypt configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mcrypt
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mcrypt
