What is mate-utils

mate-utils is:

This package contains all the tools bundled as MATE utilities:

  • mate-disk-usage-analyzer, a disk usage analyser
  • mate-dictionary, a program which can look up the definition of words over the internet (including a panel applet to do the same)
  • mate-search-tool, with which one can find files by name or content
  • mate-system-log, a log viewing application
  • mate-screenshot, a tool to take desktop screenshots and save them into a file

There are three methods to install mate-utils on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mate-utils Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mate-utils using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install mate-utils

Install mate-utils Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install mate-utils using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install mate-utils

Install mate-utils Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install mate-utils using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install mate-utils

How To Uninstall mate-utils on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the mate-utils package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove mate-utils

To uninstall mate-utils and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove mate-utils

Remove mate-utils Configurations and Data

To remove mate-utils configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge mate-utils
