The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

MATE is under active development to add support for new technologies while preserving a traditional desktop experience.

This package (mate-core) is a dummy package and can be safely removed.

There are three methods to install mate-core on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mate-core Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mate-core using apt-get by running the following command:

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install mate-core using apt by running the following command:

Install mate-core Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

How To Uninstall mate-core on Ubuntu 18.04

sudo apt-get -y autoremove mate-core

Remove mate-core Configurations and Data

To remove mate-core configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge mate-core

Remove mate-core configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove mate-core configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
