In this tutorial we learn how to install mandos-client on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is mandos-client

mandos-client is:

This is the client part of the Mandos system, which allows computers to have encrypted root file systems and at the same time be capable of remote and/or unattended reboots.

The computers run a small client program in the initial RAM disk environment which will communicate with a server over a network. All network communication is encrypted using TLS. The clients are identified by the server using an OpenPGP key; each client has one unique to it. The server sends the clients an encrypted password. The encrypted password is decrypted by the clients using the same OpenPGP key, and the password is then used to unlock the root file system, whereupon the computers can continue booting normally.

There are three methods to install mandos-client on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mandos-client Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mandos-client using apt-get by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install mandos-client using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install mandos-client

How To Uninstall mandos-client on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the mandos-client package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove mandos-client
