How To Install mail-notification on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mail-notification
on Debian 9.
What is mail-notification
mail-notification is:
mail-notification works with system trays implementing the freedesktop.org System Tray Specification, such as the GNOME Panel Notification Area, the xfce4 Notification Area and the KDE System Tray.
Mail Notification features include:
- multiple mailbox support
- mbox, MH, Maildir, Sylpheed, POP3, IMAP, Gmail and Evolution support
- Mozilla products (Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, …) mailbox support
- SASL authentication support
- APOP authentication support
- SSL/TLS support
- automatic detection of mailbox format
- immediate notification (depends on your settings)
- HIG 2.0 compliance
Note: Evolution support is available with mail-notification-evolution.
There are three methods to install mail-notification
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mail-notification Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mail-notification
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mail-notification
Install mail-notification Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mail-notification
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mail-notification
Install mail-notification Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mail-notification
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mail-notification
How To Uninstall mail-notification on Debian 9
To uninstall only the mail-notification
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mail-notification
Uninstall mail-notification And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mail-notification
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mail-notification
Remove mail-notification Configurations and Data
To remove mail-notification
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mail-notification
Remove mail-notification configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mail-notification
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mail-notification
