How To Install logwatch on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install logwatch on Kali Linux.
What is logwatch
logwatch is:
Logwatch is a modular log analyser that runs every night and mails you the results. It can also be run from command line.
The output is by service and you can limit the output to one particular service. The subscripts which are responsible for the output, mostly convert the raw log lines in structured format.
Logwatch generally ignores the time component in the output, that means, you will know that the reported event was logged in the requested range of time, but you will have to go to the raw log files to get the exact details.
There are three methods to install logwatch on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install logwatch Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install logwatch using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install logwatchInstall logwatch Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install logwatch using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install logwatchInstall logwatch Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install logwatch using aptitude by running the following command:

To uninstall only the logwatch package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove logwatchUninstall logwatch And Its Dependencies
To uninstall logwatch and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove logwatchRemove logwatch Configurations and Data
To remove logwatch configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge logwatchRemove logwatch configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
