How To Install libvlc5 on Ubuntu 18.04

What is libvlc5
libvlc5 is:
VLC is the VideoLAN project’s media player. It plays MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, WebM, FLAC, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, podcasts, and multimedia streams from various network sources.
This package contains the shared library required by applications using VLC features.
There are three methods to install libvlc5 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libvlc5 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc5 using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libvlc5
Install libvlc5 Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc5 using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libvlc5
Install libvlc5 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc5 using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libvlc5
How To Uninstall libvlc5 on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the libvlc5 package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libvlc5
Uninstall libvlc5 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libvlc5 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libvlc5
Remove libvlc5 Configurations and Data
To remove libvlc5 configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libvlc5
Remove libvlc5 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libvlc5 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libvlc5
