In this tutorial we learn how to install libva-wayland2 on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is libva-wayland2

libva-wayland2 is:

Video Acceleration API (VA API) is a library (“libVA”) and API specification which enables and provides access to graphics hardware (GPU) acceleration for video processing on Linux and UNIX based operating systems. Accelerated processing includes video decoding, video encoding, subpicture blending and rendering. The specification was originally designed by Intel for its GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) series of GPU hardware, the API is however not limited to GPUs or Intel specific hardware, as other hardware and manufacturers can also freely use this API for hardware accelerated video decoding.

This package provides the libva-wayland library.

There are three methods to install libva-wayland2 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libva-wayland2 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libva-wayland2 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libva-wayland2

Install libva-wayland2 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libva-wayland2 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libva-wayland2

Install libva-wayland2 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libva-wayland2 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libva-wayland2

How To Uninstall libva-wayland2 on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the libva-wayland2 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libva-wayland2

Uninstall libva-wayland2 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libva-wayland2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libva-wayland2

Remove libva-wayland2 Configurations and Data

To remove libva-wayland2 configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libva-wayland2

Remove libva-wayland2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libva-wayland2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libva-wayland2
