In this tutorial we learn how to install libsane-extras on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is libsane-extras

libsane-extras is:

SANE stands for “Scanner Access Now Easy” and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is free and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The current source code is written to support several operating systems, including GNU/Linux, OS/2, Win32 and various Unices and is available under the GNU General Public License (commercial applications and backends are welcome, too, however).

This package includes some backends that are not yet included into the official SANE distribution. Currently, they are :

  • geniusvp2 (Genius ColorPage-Vivid Pro II)
  • ls5000 (Nikon LS-5000 ED, Coolscan 5000 ED)

There are three methods to install libsane-extras on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libsane-extras Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libsane-extras using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libsane-extras

Install libsane-extras Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libsane-extras using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libsane-extras

Install libsane-extras Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libsane-extras using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libsane-extras

How To Uninstall libsane-extras on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the libsane-extras package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libsane-extras

Uninstall libsane-extras And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libsane-extras and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libsane-extras

Remove libsane-extras Configurations and Data

To remove libsane-extras configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libsane-extras

Remove libsane-extras configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libsane-extras configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libsane-extras
