How To Install libpfm4 on Ubuntu 20.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install libpfm4 on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is libpfm4
libpfm4 is:
Libpfm4 helps convert from an event name, expressed as a string, to the event encoding. The encoding can then be used with specific OS interfaces. Libpfm4 also provides OS-specific interfaces to directly setup OS-specific data structures to be passed to the kernel. The current libpfm4, for instance, provides support for the perf_events interface which was introduced in Linux v2.6.31.
This package provides the shared library.
There are three methods to install libpfm4 on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libpfm4 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libpfm4 using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libpfm4
Install libpfm4 Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libpfm4 using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libpfm4
Install libpfm4 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libpfm4 using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libpfm4
How To Uninstall libpfm4 on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the libpfm4 package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libpfm4
Uninstall libpfm4 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libpfm4 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libpfm4
Remove libpfm4 Configurations and Data
To remove libpfm4 configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libpfm4
Remove libpfm4 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libpfm4 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libpfm4
