How To Install libotr5 on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install libotr5 on Kali Linux.
What is libotr5
libotr5 is:
OTR allows you to have private conversations over IM by providing:
- Encryption
- No one else can read your instant messages.
- Authentication
- You are assured the correspondent is who you think it is.
- Deniability
- The messages you send do not have digital signatures that are checkable by a third party. Anyone can forge messages after a conversation to make them look like they came from you. However, during a conversation, your correspondent is assured the messages they see are authentic and unmodified.
- Perfect forward secrecy
- If you lose control of your private keys, no previous conversation is compromised.
This package provides the OTR library.
There are three methods to install libotr5 on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libotr5 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install libotr5 using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libotr5Install libotr5 Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install libotr5 using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

To uninstall only the libotr5 package we can use the following command:

To uninstall libotr5 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libotr5Remove libotr5 Configurations and Data
To remove libotr5 configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libotr5Remove libotr5 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
