How To Install libostree-dev on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install libostree-dev on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is libostree-dev
libostree-dev is:
libostree is a library for managing bootable, immutable, versioned filesystem trees. It is like git in that it checksums individual files and has a content-addressed object store; unlike git, it “checks out” the files using hardlinks into an immutable directory tree. This can be used to provide atomic upgrades with rollback, history and parallel-installation, particularly useful on “fixed purpose” systems such as embedded devices. It is also used by the Flatpak application runtime system.
This package contains development headers and the pkg-config file for libostree.
There are three methods to install libostree-dev on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libostree-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libostree-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libostree-dev

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libostree-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libostree-dev
Install libostree-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libostree-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libostree-dev
How To Uninstall libostree-dev on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the libostree-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libostree-dev
Uninstall libostree-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libostree-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libostree-dev
Remove libostree-dev Configurations and Data
To remove libostree-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libostree-dev
Remove libostree-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libostree-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libostree-dev
