How To Install libnss-systemd on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install libnss-systemd
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is libnss-systemd
libnss-systemd is:
nss-systemd is a plug-in module for the GNU Name Service Switch (NSS) functionality of the GNU C Library (glibc), providing UNIX user and group name resolution for dynamic users and groups allocated through the DynamicUser= option in systemd unit files. See systemd.exec(5) for details on this option.
Installing this package automatically adds the module to /etc/nsswitch.conf.
There are three methods to install libnss-systemd
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libnss-systemd Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libnss-systemd
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libnss-systemd
Install libnss-systemd Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libnss-systemd
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libnss-systemd
Install libnss-systemd Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libnss-systemd
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libnss-systemd
How To Uninstall libnss-systemd on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the libnss-systemd
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libnss-systemd
Uninstall libnss-systemd And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libnss-systemd
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libnss-systemd
Remove libnss-systemd Configurations and Data
To remove libnss-systemd
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libnss-systemd
Remove libnss-systemd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libnss-systemd
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libnss-systemd
