In this tutorial we learn how to install libnfc-bin on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is libnfc-bin

libnfc-bin is:

libnfc is a library for Near Field Communication. It abstracts the low-level details of communicating with the devices away behind an easy-to-use high-level API. It supports most hardware based on the NXP PN531, PN532 or PN533 controller chips.

This package contains some utils that come along with libnfc, for development or debugging purposes (including nfc-list, nfc-mfclassic, nfc-mfultralight, etc).

There are three methods to install libnfc-bin on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libnfc-bin Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libnfc-bin using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libnfc-bin

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libnfc-bin using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libnfc-bin

Install libnfc-bin Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libnfc-bin using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libnfc-bin

How To Uninstall libnfc-bin on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the libnfc-bin package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libnfc-bin

Uninstall libnfc-bin And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libnfc-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libnfc-bin

Remove libnfc-bin Configurations and Data

To remove libnfc-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libnfc-bin

Remove libnfc-bin configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libnfc-bin configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libnfc-bin
