In this tutorial we learn how to install libappstream-glib8 on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is libappstream-glib8

libappstream-glib8 is:

AppStream is a cross-distribution effort for creating and sharing metadata about software components available in the package repositories of a distribution.

This package contains a GObject-based library to read and write AppStream XML metadata and retrieve additional data such as screenshots.

As opposed to libappstream, this library does not use an on-disk cache but reads data directly from the XML or DEP-11 YAML files.

There are three methods to install libappstream-glib8 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libappstream-glib8 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

We can use the following command to remove libappstream-glib8 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libappstream-glib8
