Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install ldm-server on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is ldm-server

ldm-server is:

ldm is an X11 display manager similar to xdm, gdm and kdm, but unlike those it wraps the X11 traffic within an SSH tunnel to provide a secure login mechanism for remote X sessions.

This package includes the server components used by ldm to discover available sessions and locales on the server. It also recommends packages relevant for local device access, a login session, and remote sound.

LTSP stands for ‘Linux Terminal Server Project’.

There are three methods to install ldm-server on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ldm-server Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ldm-server using apt-get by running the following command:

After updating apt database, We can install ldm-server using apt by running the following command:

Install ldm-server Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ldm-server using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ldm-server

How To Uninstall ldm-server on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the ldm-server package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ldm-server

Uninstall ldm-server And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ldm-server and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ldm-server

Remove ldm-server Configurations and Data

To remove ldm-server configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ldm-server
