In this tutorial we learn how to install krb5-otp on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is krb5-otp

krb5-otp is:

Kerberos is a system for authenticating users and services on a network. Kerberos is a trusted third-party service. That means that there is a third party (the Kerberos server) that is trusted by all the entities on the network (users and services, usually called “principals”).

This is the MIT reference implementation of Kerberos V5.

This package contains a plugin for the OTP preauthentication method (RFC 6560), which allows Kerberos tickets to be obtained using One-Time Password authentication. This plugin is for use on the KDC; the client support is built in to libkrb5.

There are three methods to install krb5-otp on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install krb5-otp Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-otp using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install krb5-otp

Install krb5-otp Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-otp using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install krb5-otp

Install krb5-otp Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-otp using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install krb5-otp

How To Uninstall krb5-otp on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the krb5-otp package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove krb5-otp

Uninstall krb5-otp And Its Dependencies

To uninstall krb5-otp and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove krb5-otp

Remove krb5-otp Configurations and Data

To remove krb5-otp configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge krb5-otp

Remove krb5-otp configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove krb5-otp configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge krb5-otp
