In this tutorial we learn how to install krb5-kdc on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is krb5-kdc

krb5-kdc is:

Kerberos is a system for authenticating users and services on a network. Kerberos is a trusted third-party service. That means that there is a third party (the Kerberos server) that is trusted by all the entities on the network (users and services, usually called “principals”).

This is the MIT reference implementation of Kerberos V5.

This package contains the Kerberos key server (KDC). The KDC manages all authentication credentials for a Kerberos realm, holds the master keys for the realm, and responds to authentication requests. This package should be installed on both master and slave KDCs.

There are three methods to install krb5-kdc on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install krb5-kdc Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-kdc using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install krb5-kdc

Install krb5-kdc Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-kdc using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install krb5-kdc

Install krb5-kdc Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install krb5-kdc using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install krb5-kdc

How To Uninstall krb5-kdc on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the krb5-kdc package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove krb5-kdc

Uninstall krb5-kdc And Its Dependencies

To uninstall krb5-kdc and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove krb5-kdc

Remove krb5-kdc Configurations and Data

To remove krb5-kdc configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge krb5-kdc

Remove krb5-kdc configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove krb5-kdc configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge krb5-kdc
