How To Install knot-resolver on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install knot-resolver on Kali Linux. knot-resolver is caching, DNSSEC-validating DNS resolver

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install knot-resolver on Kali Linux.

What is knot-resolver

knot-resolver is:

The Knot Resolver is a caching full resolver implementation written in C and LuaJIT, including both a resolver library and a daemon. Modular architecture of the library keeps the core tiny and efficient, and provides a state-machine like API for extensions. There are three built-in modules - iterator, cache, validator, and many external.

The Lua modules, switchable and shareable cache, and fast FFI bindings makes it great to tap into resolution process, or be used for your recursive DNS service. It’s the OpenResty of DNS.

The server adopts a different scaling strategy than the rest of the DNS recursors - no threading, shared-nothing architecture (except MVCC cache that may be shared). You can start and stop additional nodes depending on the contention without downtime.

There are three methods to install knot-resolver on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install knot-resolver Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-resolver using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install knot-resolver

Install knot-resolver Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-resolver using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install knot-resolver

Install knot-resolver Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-resolver using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install knot-resolver

How To Uninstall knot-resolver on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the knot-resolver package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove knot-resolver

Uninstall knot-resolver And Its Dependencies

To uninstall knot-resolver and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove knot-resolver

Remove knot-resolver Configurations and Data

To remove knot-resolver configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
