Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install knot-dnsutils on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is knot-dnsutils

knot-dnsutils is:

Knot DNS is a fast, authoritative only, high performance, feature full and open source name server.

Knot DNS is developed by CZ.NIC Labs, the R&D department of .CZ registry and hence is well suited to run anything from the root zone, the top-level domain, to many smaller standard domain names.

This package delivers various client programs related to DNS that are derived from the Knot DNS source tree.

  • [k]dig - query the DNS in various ways
  • [k]nsupdate - perform dynamic updates (See RFC2136)

Those clients were designed to be 1:1 compatible with BIND dnsutils, but they provide some enhancements, which are documented in respective manpages.

WARNING: [k]nslookup is not provided as it is considered obsolete.

There are three methods to install knot-dnsutils on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install knot-dnsutils Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-dnsutils using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install knot-dnsutils

Install knot-dnsutils Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-dnsutils using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install knot-dnsutils

Install knot-dnsutils Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install knot-dnsutils using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install knot-dnsutils

How To Uninstall knot-dnsutils on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the knot-dnsutils package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove knot-dnsutils

Uninstall knot-dnsutils And Its Dependencies

To uninstall knot-dnsutils and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove knot-dnsutils

Remove knot-dnsutils Configurations and Data

To remove knot-dnsutils configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge knot-dnsutils

Remove knot-dnsutils configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove knot-dnsutils configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge knot-dnsutils
