How To Install kismet on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install kismet
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is kismet
kismet is:
Kismet is an 802.11 layer-2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. It will work with any wireless card that supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11a/b/g/n traffic.
It can use other programs to play audio alarms for network events, read out network summaries, or provide GPS coordinates.
This is the main package containing the core, client, and server.
There are three methods to install kismet
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install kismet Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install kismet
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install kismet

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install kismet
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install kismet
Install kismet Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude

sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install kismet
using aptitude

sudo aptitude -y install kismet
How To Uninstall kismet on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the kismet
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove kismet
Uninstall kismet And Its Dependencies
To uninstall kismet
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove kismet
Remove kismet Configurations and Data
To remove kismet
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge kismet
Remove kismet configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove kismet
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge kismet
