How To Install hashdeep on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install hashdeep on Kali Linux.
What is hashdeep
hashdeep is:
hashdeep is a set of tools to compute MD5, SHA1, SHA256, tiger and whirlpool hashsums of arbitrary number of files recursively.
The main hashdeep features are:
- It can compare those hashsums with a list of known hashes;
- The tools can display those that match the list or those that does not match;
- It can display a time estimation when processing large files.
- It can do piecewise hashing (hash input files in arbitrary sized blocks).
This package is useful in forensics investigations.
There are three methods to install hashdeep on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install hashdeep Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install hashdeep using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install hashdeepInstall hashdeep Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install hashdeep using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install hashdeepInstall hashdeep Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install hashdeep using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install hashdeepHow To Uninstall hashdeep on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the hashdeep package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove hashdeepUninstall hashdeep And Its Dependencies
To uninstall hashdeep and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove hashdeepRemove hashdeep Configurations and Data
To remove hashdeep configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge hashdeepRemove hashdeep configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove hashdeep configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge hashdeepDependencies
