How To Install grub-xen on Debian 9

In this tutorial we learn how to install grub-xen
on Debian 9.
What is grub-xen
grub-xen is:
GRUB is a portable, powerful bootloader. This version of GRUB is based on a cleaner design than its predecessors, and provides the following new features:
- Scripting in grub.cfg using BASH-like syntax.
- Support for modern partition maps such as GPT.
- Modular generation of grub.cfg via update-grub. Packages providing GRUB add-ons can plug in their own script rules and trigger updates by invoking update-grub.
This package contains a version of GRUB that has been built for use with the Xen hypervisor (i.e. PV-GRUB).
There are three methods to install grub-xen
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install grub-xen Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install grub-xen
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install grub-xen

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install grub-xen
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install grub-xen
Install grub-xen Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install grub-xen
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install grub-xen
How To Uninstall grub-xen on Debian 9
To uninstall only the grub-xen
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove grub-xen
Uninstall grub-xen And Its Dependencies
To uninstall grub-xen
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove grub-xen
Remove grub-xen Configurations and Data
To remove grub-xen
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge grub-xen
Remove grub-xen configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove grub-xen
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge grub-xen
