How To Install gnome-packagekit on Debian 10

In this tutorial we learn how to install gnome-packagekit
on Debian 10.
What is gnome-packagekit
gnome-packagekit is:
PackageKit allows performing simple software management tasks over a DBus interface e.g. refreshing the cache, updating, installing and removing software packages or searching for multimedia codecs and file handlers.
This package contains a GTK+ based application for package installation and removal, an application to view system updates, a simple repository editor and PackageKit configuration tool and a viewer for package installation history.
There are three methods to install gnome-packagekit
on Debian 10. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gnome-packagekit Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-packagekit
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gnome-packagekit

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-packagekit
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gnome-packagekit
Install gnome-packagekit Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-packagekit
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gnome-packagekit
How To Uninstall gnome-packagekit on Debian 10
To uninstall only the gnome-packagekit
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gnome-packagekit
Uninstall gnome-packagekit And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gnome-packagekit
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 10, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gnome-packagekit
