How To Install git-crypt on Ubuntu 22.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install git-crypt
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is git-crypt
git-crypt is:
git-crypt enables transparent encryption and decryption of files in a git repository. Files which you choose to protect are encrypted when committed, and decrypted when checked out. git-crypt lets you freely share a repository containing a mix of public and private content. git-crypt gracefully degrades, so developers without the secret key can still clone and commit to a repository with encrypted files. This lets you store your secret material (such as keys or passwords) in the same repository as your code, without requiring you to lock down your entire repository.
There are three methods to install git-crypt
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install git-crypt Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install git-crypt
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install git-crypt
Install git-crypt Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install git-crypt
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install git-crypt
Install git-crypt Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install git-crypt
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install git-crypt
How To Uninstall git-crypt on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the git-crypt
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove git-crypt
Uninstall git-crypt And Its Dependencies
To uninstall git-crypt
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove git-crypt
Remove git-crypt Configurations and Data
To remove git-crypt
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge git-crypt
Remove git-crypt configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove git-crypt
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge git-crypt
