What is getty-run

getty-run is:

runit is a collection of tools to provide system-wide service supervision and to manage services. Contrary to sysv init, it not only cares about starting and stopping services, but also supervises the service daemons while they are running. Amongst other things, it provides a reliable interface to send signals to service daemons without the need for pid-files, and a log facility with automatic log file rotation and disk space limits.

This package provides scripts to supervise getty processes, allowing local login.

There are three methods to install getty-run on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install getty-run Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install getty-run using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install getty-run

Install getty-run Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install getty-run using apt by running the following command:

Install getty-run Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

How To Uninstall getty-run on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the getty-run package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove getty-run

To uninstall getty-run and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove getty-run

Remove getty-run Configurations and Data

To remove getty-run configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge getty-run

Remove getty-run configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove getty-run configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge getty-run
