What is gdal

Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL/OGR) is a cross platform C++ translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. It also comes with a variety of useful commandline utilities for data translation and processing. It provides the primary data access engine for many applications. GDAL/OGR is the most widely used geospatial data access library.

We can use yum or dnf to install gdal on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install gdal.

Install gdal on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install gdal using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install gdal

Install gdal on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install gdal using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install gdal

How To Uninstall gdal on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the gdal package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove gdal
