How To Install flowgrind on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install flowgrind on Kali Linux.
What is flowgrind
flowgrind is:
Flowgrind is a TCP performance measurement tool similar to iperf and netperf to measure throughput and other metrics for TCP. In Flowgrind’s distributed architecture, the flowgrind controller is used to schedule flows between and collect live samples from nodes running the flowgrindd daemon.
Features:
- Measure bandwidth, delay, and IAT and sample TCP kernel metrics (tcp_info)
- Bulk transfers, rate-limited flows, sophisticated request/response test
- Report observed MSS/MTU size
- Set buffer size on per flow basis
- Set congestion control algorithm, DSCP field, etc.
- Uses asynchronous I/O to improve fairness between flows
- Gnuplot compatible configureable output format
There are three methods to install flowgrind on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install flowgrind Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get -y install flowgrindInstall flowgrind Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install flowgrind using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install flowgrindInstall flowgrind Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install flowgrind using aptitude by running the following command:

To uninstall only the flowgrind package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove flowgrindUninstall flowgrind And Its Dependencies
To uninstall flowgrind and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove flowgrindRemove flowgrind Configurations and Data
To remove flowgrind configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge flowgrindRemove flowgrind configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove flowgrind configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge flowgrindDependencies
