How To Install fbterm on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install fbterm
on Debian 9.
What is fbterm
fbterm is:
FbTerm is a fast terminal emulator for Linux with frame buffer device.
Features include:
- mostly as fast as terminal of Linux kernel while accelerated scrolling is enabled on framebuffer device
- select font with fontconfig and draw text with freetype2, same as Qt/Gtk+ based GUI apps
- dynamicly create/destroy up to 10 windows initially running default shell
- record scrollback history for every window
- auto-detect current locale and convert text encoding, support double width scripts like Chinese, Japanese etc
- switch between configurable additional text encoding with hot keys on the fly
- copy/past selected text between windows with mouse when gpm server is running
There are three methods to install fbterm
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude

Install fbterm Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install fbterm
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install fbterm

After updating apt database, We can install fbterm

by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install fbterm
Install fbterm Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install fbterm
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install fbterm
How To Uninstall fbterm on Debian 9
To uninstall only the fbterm
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove fbterm
Uninstall fbterm And Its Dependencies
To uninstall fbterm
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove fbterm
Remove fbterm Configurations and Data
To remove fbterm
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge fbterm
