In this tutorial we learn how to install fam on Kali Linux.

What is fam

fam is:

FAM monitors files and directories, notifying interested applications of changes.

This package provides a server that can monitor a given list of files and notify applications through a socket. If the kernel supports dnotify (kernels >= 2.4.x) FAM is notified directly by the kernel. Otherwise it has to poll the files’ status. FAM can also provide an RPC service for monitoring remote files (such as on a mounted NFS filesystem).

There are three methods to install fam on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install fam Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install fam using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install fam

Install fam Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install fam using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install fam

Install fam Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

To uninstall only the fam package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove fam

sudo apt-get -y purge fam
