How To Install erlang on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install erlang
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is erlang
erlang is:
Open Source Erlang is a functional programming language designed at the Ericsson Computer Science Laboratory.
Some of Erlang main features are:
- Clear declarative syntax and is largely free from side-effects;
- Built-in support for real-time, concurrent and distributed programming;
- Designed for development of robust and continuously operated programs;
- Dynamic code replacement at runtime.
The Erlang distribution also includes OTP (Open Telecom Platform) which provides a rich set of libraries and applications.
This package is a dummy package which will install Erlang/OTP runtime, applications, sources, code examples and the Erlang editing mode for Emacs.
There are three methods to install erlang
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install erlang Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install erlang
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install erlang

Update apt database with apt

sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install erlang
using apt

sudo apt -y install erlang
Install erlang Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude

After updating apt database, We can install erlang

How To Uninstall erlang on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the erlang
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove erlang
Uninstall erlang And Its Dependencies
To uninstall erlang
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove erlang
Remove erlang Configurations and Data
To remove erlang
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge erlang
Remove erlang configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
