How To Install el-get on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install el-get on Debian 9.
What is el-get
el-get is:
Allows you to install and manage elisp code for Emacs. It supports lots of differents types of sources and is able to ‘install’ them, ‘update’ them and ‘remove’ them, but more importantly it will ‘init’ them for you.
That means it will care about requiring the ‘features’ you need, loading the files, setting the ‘Info’ paths so that C-h i shows the new documentation you now depend on, and finally call your own :after function for you to setup the extension.
There are three methods to install el-get on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install el-get Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install el-get using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install el-get
Install el-get Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install el-get using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install el-get
Install el-get Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install el-get using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install el-get
How To Uninstall el-get on Debian 9
To uninstall only the el-get package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove el-get
Uninstall el-get And Its Dependencies
To uninstall el-get and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove el-get
Remove el-get Configurations and Data
To remove el-get configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge el-get
