In this tutorial we learn how to install dracut on CentOS 8.

What is dracut

dracut contains tools to create bootable initramfses for the Linux kernel. Unlike previous implementations, dracut hard-codes as little as possible into the initramfs. dracut contains various modules which are driven by the event-based udev. Having root on MD, DM, LVM2, LUKS is supported as well as NFS, iSCSI, NBD, FCoE with the dracut-network package. dracut contains tools to create bootable initramfses for the Linux kernel. We can use yum or dnf to install dracut on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install dracut.

Install dracut on CentOS 8 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install dracut using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install dracut

Install dracut on CentOS 8 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install dracut using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install dracut

How To Uninstall dracut on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the dracut package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove dracut
