Cyrus is an IMAP server designed to handle massive quantities of mail, with a number of features not found in other IMAP implementations, including support for:

  • running the daemon without root privileges;
  • POP3 and NNTP in addition to plain IMAP;
  • CalDAV and CardDAV;
  • secure IMAP using SSL;
  • server-side filtering with Sieve;
  • mail users without login accounts;
  • simple mail quotas;
  • virtual domains;
  • IPv6.

Install cyrus-imapd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install cyrus-imapd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install cyrus-imapd

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install cyrus-imapd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install cyrus-imapd

Install cyrus-imapd Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install cyrus-imapd using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install cyrus-imapd

How To Uninstall cyrus-imapd on Debian 11

To uninstall only the cyrus-imapd package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove cyrus-imapd

To uninstall cyrus-imapd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 11, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove cyrus-imapd
