How To Install cruft-ng on Debian 12
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install cruft-ng on Debian 12.
What is cruft-ng
cruft-ng is:
cruft-ng is a program to look over your system for anything that shouldn’t be there, but is - the so called “cruft”; or for anything that should be there, but isn’t.
cpigs is a program that by default works like dpigs but for volatile data. It prints out the package with the most volatile data (usually apt, plocate…) It can also dump it’s whole state into a .csv format usable for more in depth analysis.
Both cruft-ng and cpigs base most of their results on dpkg’s & plocate’s databases, and also use a built-in custom homegrown ruleset to match volatile files to the corresponding engine.
Packages wanting to document such volatile files can do so using dh-cruft.
There are three methods to install cruft-ng on Debian 12. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install cruft-ng Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install cruft-ng using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install cruft-ng
Install cruft-ng Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install cruft-ng using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install cruft-ng
Install cruft-ng Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install cruft-ng using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install cruft-ng
How To Uninstall cruft-ng on Debian 12
To uninstall only the cruft-ng package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove cruft-ng
Uninstall cruft-ng And Its Dependencies
To uninstall cruft-ng and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove cruft-ng
Remove cruft-ng Configurations and Data
To remove cruft-ng configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge cruft-ng
Remove cruft-ng configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove cruft-ng configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge cruft-ng
