How To Install console-setup on Kali Linux

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install console-setup on Kali Linux.

What is console-setup

console-setup is:

This package provides the console with the same keyboard configuration scheme as the X Window System. As a result, there is no need to duplicate or change the keyboard files just to make simple customizations such as the use of dead keys, the key functioning as AltGr or Compose key, the key(s) to switch between Latin and non-Latin mode, etc.

The package also installs console fonts supporting many of the world’s languages. It provides an unified set of font faces - the classic VGA, the simplistic Fixed, and the cleaned Terminus, TerminusBold and TerminusBoldVGA.

There are three methods to install console-setup on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install console-setup Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install console-setup using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install console-setup

Install console-setup Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install console-setup using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install console-setup

Install console-setup Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install console-setup using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install console-setup

How To Uninstall console-setup on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the console-setup package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove console-setup

Uninstall console-setup And Its Dependencies

To uninstall console-setup and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove console-setup

Remove console-setup Configurations and Data

To remove console-setup configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge console-setup

Remove console-setup configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove console-setup configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge console-setup
