What is bowtie2

Bowtie 2 is an ultra fast and memory-efficient tool for aligning sequencing reads to long reference sequences. It is particularly good at aligning reads of about 50 up to 100s or 1,000s of characters, and particularly good at aligning to relatively long (e.g. mammalian) genomes. Bowtie 2 indexes the genome with an FM Index to keep its memory footprint small its memory footprint is typically around 3.2 GB. Bowtie 2 supports gapped, local, and paired-end alignment modes.

We can use yum or dnf to install bowtie2 on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install bowtie2.

Install bowtie2 on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install bowtie2 using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install bowtie2

Install bowtie2 on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install bowtie2 using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install bowtie2

How To Uninstall bowtie2 on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the bowtie2 package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove bowtie2
