How To Install asterisk on Debian 9

on Debian 9.
What is asterisk
asterisk is:
Asterisk is an Open Source PBX and telephony toolkit. It is, in a sense, middleware between Internet and telephony channels on the bottom, and Internet and telephony applications at the top.
Asterisk can be used with Voice over IP (SIP, H.323, IAX and more) standards, or the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) through supported hardware.
Supported hardware:
- All Wildcard (tm) ISDN PRI cards from Digium (http://www.digium.com)
- HFC-S/HFC-4S-based ISDN BRI cards (Junghanns.NET, beroNet, Digium etc.)
- All TDM (FXO/FXS) cards from Digium
- Various clones of Digium cards such as those by OpenVox
- Xorcom Astribank USB telephony adapter (http://www.xorcom.com)
- Voicetronix OpenPCI, OpenLine and OpenSwitch cards
- CAPI-compatible ISDN cards (using the add-on package chan-capi)
- Full Duplex Sound Card (ALSA or OSS) supported by Linux
- Tormenta T1/E1 card (http://www.zapatatelephony.org)
- QuickNet Internet PhoneJack and LineJack (http://www.quicknet.net)
This is the main package that includes the Asterisk daemon and most channel drivers and applications.
There are three methods to install asterisk
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install asterisk Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install asterisk
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install asterisk

Update apt database with apt

sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install asterisk
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install asterisk
Install asterisk Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install asterisk
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install asterisk
How To Uninstall asterisk on Debian 9
To uninstall only the asterisk
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove asterisk
Uninstall asterisk And Its Dependencies
To uninstall asterisk
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove asterisk
Remove asterisk Configurations and Data
To remove asterisk
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge asterisk
Remove asterisk configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove asterisk
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge asterisk
