How To Install appstream-util on Debian 10

In this tutorial we learn how to install appstream-util
on Debian 10.
What is appstream-util
appstream-util is:
AppStream is a cross-distribution effort for creating and sharing metadata about software components available in the package repositories of a distribution.
This package provides an utility to work with AppStream metadata, which uses libappstream-glib.
It also contains Autotools macros to easily integrate AppStream metadata into an Autotools-based buildsystem, by running ‘appstream-util’ to validate the files before installing them.
There are three methods to install appstream-util
on Debian 10. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install appstream-util Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-util
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install appstream-util

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-util
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install appstream-util
Install appstream-util Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-util
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install appstream-util
How To Uninstall appstream-util on Debian 10
To uninstall only the appstream-util
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove appstream-util
Uninstall appstream-util And Its Dependencies
To uninstall appstream-util
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 10, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove appstream-util
Remove appstream-util Configurations and Data
To remove appstream-util
configuration and data from Debian 10 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge appstream-util
Remove appstream-util configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
